Srinagar, Mar 20 (UNI) Concerned over the biting cold due to fresh snowfall and heavy rains, the health authorities in the Kashmir valley have issued directions to general public to wear warm clothes and avoid going out unnecessarily.

The Divisional Administration in Kashmir has declared a holiday in all government and private schools today because of the cold.

A spokesman of the Kashmir health department said here the recent snowfall has resulted in considerable cold in the valley.

To avoid cold related diseases, including bad cold, fever, chest infection and cough, people in general and elderly and children, are advised to wear warm clothes and remain indoors, he said.

He said drinking water should be used after boiling properly, avoid going out unnecessarily, eat fruits and vegetables after washing them properly and avoid going out immediately after taking bath.

The entire Kashmir valley is under the grip of severe cold with mercury dipping to several degree below normal because of fresh snowfall on the upper reaches and continued heavy rains in the plains, including Srinagar.

The authorities have declared a holiday in all educational institutions, which were scheduled to reopen today, after remaining closed since March 5 due to unprecedented snowfall. The schools will also remain closed tomorrow on account of public holiday.
