Mumbai, Mar 20 (UNI) Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray today said he was not averse to an alliance with Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as it would be in the interests of the state.

Mr Thackeray's comments came in the wake of NCP taking his party's support to win the Pune Mayoral election and giving the Deputy Mayorship to Shiv Sena. ''Pawar is an old friend and I have been saying that if the two parties come together, it would be in the interests of Maharashtra. I had earlier announced that Shiv Sena would support his candidature for the Prime Minister's post. But, Mr Pawar's stand is never clear,'' Mr Thackeray told reporters at his residence after releasing a compilation of poems by Jagdish Khebudkar.

Responding to a question about Shiv Sena-Congress alliance in many local bodies, Mr Thackeray admitted that such alliances had taken place. ''Local activists are beginning to consider themselves as leaders and take decision on their own. I will seek an explanation in this matter,'' he added.

To a question on India's performance in the on-going World Cup, Mr Thackeray, an avid cricket buff said fans should have patience in handling victories and defeats. ''Cricket is after all a sport,'' he added.
