Mumbai, Mar 20 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) today said it did not subscribe to Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray comment, that a Shiv Sena-NCP alliance was in the interests of Maharashtra.

Talking to UNI here, NCP general secretary Gurunath Kulkarni said his party did not subscribe to the Sena chief's opinion. ''We have established our credentials as a secular party despite the rampant rumours from all quarters including from the Congress about the NCP joining the saffron alliance of Shiv Sena-BJP during the rule of NDA government,'' he said.

He said the NCP had proved its secular credentials in the last eight years. Mr Kulkarni said the Shiv Sena-NCP alliance in Pune Municipal corporation happened only because of the Congress party's negative attitude of not supporting the NCP mayoral candidate.

''We supported the Congress in three other corporations where their numbers were more than us. But, Congress did not do so in Pune.

Personal animosity of individuals should not come in way of political decisions,''he said.

When asked about NCP chief and union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar's comments that his party could enter into alliance with any party including the Shiv Sena, Mr Kulkarni said he had been misquoted in the media. ''What he meant was state and national level political situations were different from local ones and decisions have to be taken accordingly,''he remarked.
