Market ends in green with marginal gains

Mumbai, Mar 20 (UNI) The Sensex today rose by a modest 60.95 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) to settle in the green at 12,705.94 on strengthening of global markets and short-covering in the derivatives segment.

Among the broader markets, the Nifty Index gained 18.70 points on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to end at 3697.60 from its previous close of 3678.90 points.

At the BSE, the market edged higher amid volatile trading in IT, telecom and index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL). Banks and cement shares also gained, though the turnover remained low for the second day in a row.

The market had retained strength in early-afternoon trade, a gain of about 100 points for the day till then. However, a fall out of the blue found the Sensex hovering at 12,674.77 at 1307 hrs, just 29.78 points ahead for the day, a low from which the benchmark index bounced back in mid-afternoon trade.

The barometer index had moved between a low of 12,674.77 and a high of 12,798.80 for the day.

The market-breadth was positive. Against 1,331 scrips rising on BSE, 1,227 declined. A total of 70 shares were unchanged. Gainers outpaced losers by a ratio of 1.08:1. However, the breadth weakened in late trading, when the Sensex pared gains from a strong mid-afternoon surge, market analysts observed.

The BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 2841 crore compared to yesterday's Rs 2676 crore.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) today decided to keep interest rates unchanged at 0.5 per cent. BoJ Governor Toshihiko Fukui said the bank would adjust rates gradually.
