Stir against alleged rape by troops suspended

Imphal, March 19 (UNI) An Assam Rifles soldier, allegedly involved in the rape and assault of an 18-year old girl at Kotlien, Senapati district, has been detained in police custody.

Police said the accused had allegedly raped and assaulted a girl on March 13 and the accused was detained by police yesterday. The scribes here had also boycotted the Manipur Assembly and the army after the journalists who went to cover a protest against the alleged rape were beaten up and detained by troops.

The All Tribal Students' Union, Kuki Students' Organisation and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur have announced that they will wait for about 15 days for steps to be taken against the alleged jawan.

Police said medical tests have been done on the victim. The three students' bodies said last evening a discussion was held with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Chief Secretary Jelshyam, DGP Joykumar and IG AR(S) Maj Gen Chengapa and it was decided to institute a Staff Inquiry.

The journalists have also withdrawn their stir following assurance to take action against the jawans involved in assaulting the scribes. The journalists today attended the Assembly session.

The first day of the session was boycotted earlier as a mark of protest.
