Bhubaneswar, Mar 19 (UNI) The Orissa government today ordered an inquiry into the loss of vision of six people of Madel village under Santput gram panchayat in Kalahandi district following a cataract operation.

State Health Minister Duryadhan Majhi said a specialist team from the V S S Medical College and Hospital in Burla will visit the village to conduct an on-the-spot probe into the incident and submit its report within three days.

The government, he said, would take appropriate action on the basis of the findings of the report of the expert committee..

Six patients who have lost one of their eyes during the post operation stage, had lodged a complaint with police on Saturday last alleging negligence of doctors during the cataract operation in the district headquarter hospital at Bhawanipatna.

The victims were operated on January 23 at the Bhawanipatna Hospital and left home after the operation. Later they complained of pain in their eye and reported loss of vision. The cataract operation was sponsored by an NGO where as many as 14 people were operated.

The doctors at the Bhawanipatna Hospital maintained that despite request the patients did not stay in the hospital during the post operation stage and left for their villages. They attributed the loss of vision to the negligence and non cooperation during the post operation stage.
