'Postpone delimitation of Assembly constituencies in state'

Shillong, Mar 18: The Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government has decided to move an official resolution in the ongoing budget session for the postponement of the move for delimitation of the Assembly constituencies in the state.

Talking to reporters after the MDA meeting at the residence of Chief Minister D D Lapang on Friday night, MDA Spokesman Paul Lyngdoh said the proposed delimitation of Assembly constituencies was a matter of concern in view of the fact that the Assembly polls were barely 11 months away.

''We have unanimously requested the state government to move an official resolution in the current Assembly session to urge the Delimitation Commission to keep in abeyance the proposal for delimitation of constituencies, '' Mr Lyngdoh said.

The Delimitation Commission members will visit the state on April 18 and 19 to seek opinions on the draft proposal for delimitation of constituencies from political parties' leaders, NGOs and other senior citizens of the state.
