Shillong, Mar 18: Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob has lauded Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for playing a leading role in redefining education to meet the changing needs of the society.

Addressing the 18th Convocation of IGNOU here yesterday, Mr Jacob said at present IGNOU offers up to 129 programmes and the span of programmes ranges from the awareness level to the cutting edge level in the frontiers of knowledge.

''The university offers high quality, innovative and need-based programmes at different levels, especially to the disadvantaged segments of society, at affordable costs by using a variety of media and technology, '' Mr Jacob said.

The use of technology by the University had added a new dimension in distance and open learning system, especially in strengthening the learners' support services, Mr Jacob asserted.

He said for the educational development of the North Eastern region, the university had executed the North East Project (NEP), funded by the Prime Minister's non-lapsable fund.

The university had also taken initiative to train the untrained in-service school teachers of the region through the innovative certificate programmes in primary education, Mr Jacob informed.
