Vehicular movement on NH 48 disrupted by agitators

Udupi, Mar 17 (UNI) Vehicular movement on the National Highway 48 from Byndoor to Bykampady was totally disrupted due to Rasta Roko agitation members of the Nagarjuna Vidyut Virodhi Samithi to protest against the proposed 1015 mw coal based thermal power project by Nagarjuna Power Company Limited (NPCL) at Nandikur in the District.

Road blocks were put up at several points by placing stones, by burning tyres, erecting shamianas. No vehicles were allowed to pass on the national highway since 0700 hrs today by the agitators.

Business establishments, Hotels remained closed on the National Highway, Udupi City, Kaup, Padubidre, Ermal and Nandikur. Traveling public from far off places were prevented at Ermal and taken in police vehicles to their destinations.

Superintendent of Police Dr Subramanyeshwar Rao, who was supervising the bundobust, told the visiting press persons at Ermal that the situation was so for remained peaceful without any incident. The police were on the work to clear all road blocks and the people who have sat on the national highway. All vehicles coming from Byndoor side to Udupi have been diverted via Kollur, he added.
