Bhopal, Mar 17 (UNI) The Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, located at Jashpur in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, has been selected for the Madhya Pradesh Culture Department's First Chandrashekhar Azad Rashtriya Samman.

The award, instituted last year, carries a cash component of Rs 1.5 lakh and a citation.

''The honour is for those individuals or organisations contributing creatively and notching up special achievements relating to the ideals of the freedom struggle, patriotism and the social sector,'' Minister of State for Culture Lakshmikant Sharma told reporters here today.

A high-level jury chose the Ashram for its constant efforts towards uplift of tribals by displaying a sense of service, compassion, friendship and patriotism in the face of a challenge by foreign destructive powers.

Set up in 1952, the Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram Centre undertakes educational, health and economic development of tribals in remote forest areas and encourages rural sports. Its services extend to Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh and Bihar.
