Kerala appoints official to combat trafficking in Gulf nations
Dubai, Mar 17 (UNI) Kerala's Director General of Police has appointed a nodal officer to coordinate with Indian Embassies and Consulates in the Gulf countries against the menace of trafficking of women from Kerala to the region.
This was revealed by Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan during his recent visit to the Consulate-General of India office in Dubai, a news report said today.
Mr Balakrishnan held discussions with Consul General Venu Rajamony on various issues pertaining to Indian community, including the trafficking of women from Kerala to UAE.
The Minister also met some victims of trafficking and promised to take stringent action against the agents involved.
Mr Rajamony requested that the Kerala police investigate and prosecute these agents and suggested that the state authorities publicise the risks of single women coming for jobs to this region, especially as housemaids.
Authenticity of sponsors of single Indian women travelling to the UAE should likewise be confirmed by government authorities in Kerala, he said.
