Engineers threaten enmasse resignation

Imphal, Mar 17 (UNI) The Public Works Department, Irrigation and Flood Control, Public Health Engineering and Power Department engineers in Manipur today threatened to resign enmasse protesting against the increased abduction cases.

About 300 engineers staged a demonstrations in front of the PWD office after a Superintendent Engineer of Power Department was abducted yesterday by suspected militants.

They said the frequency in abduction of engineers by suspected militants have increased of late.

The engineers with placards, which read, 'Allow us to work freely', 'stop political interference,' demonstrated.

Most of the abductions were not reported out of fear, the engineers said.

They also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh demanding conducive work atmosphere for the engineers.

PWD chief engineer NG Rashtrapati said, '' the interference was from all sides and we have no option but to resign.'' However, no deadline had been given for tendering the resignations.

They also alleged that they were facing lot of undue pressures from politicians and bureaucrats and were transfered to remote places if favour was not given to them.
