Chennai, Mar 15 (UNI) Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today condemned the deaths of innocent people in police firing at Nandigram in West Bengal.

In a statement here, he said there was not enough provocation for the police to open fire on the people of Nandigram.

''Such protests are part of internationally-recognised peaceful agitations made famous as Satyagraha by Gandhiji,'' he said.

Dr Swamy said the gruesome incidents should open the eyes of democratic forces.

''Those who equivocate at this hour of tragedy, as the Congress party is doing, deserve the total censure of the people,'' he added.

He urged the West Bengal Governor, who was also the grandson of Gandhiji, to rectify the situation by calling the Chief Minister to account.
