Hurley's wedlock an ecological blow

London, Mar 15 (UNI) Just-married British super-model Liz Hurley has been slammed by green campaigners after her week-long wedding produced more carbon emissions than the average couple do in a decade.

According to Oxford-based environment consultants Best Foot Forward, the British actress's marriage to Indian businessman Arun Nayar released a massive 200 tonnes - 200,000kg - of carbon into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to the average British couple's carbon footprint for ten years.

It would take an Indian couple 123 years to cause similar ecological damage.

A spokesman for Best Foot Forward said yesterday, ''This level of emission is utter wasteful extravagance. We have to challenge the idea that this is something wonderful and realise it is putting the planet in danger.'' Best Foot Forward says the biggest polluter was the couple's Learjet to Mumbai and the Maldives, which emitted 82 tonnes on its 12,000 mile round-trip.

A spokesman for Friends of the Earth added, ''Perhaps stars like Liz should think about setting a more positive example.'' During their Sudeley-Castle wedding, guests and staff travelling to Gloucestershire added 30 tonnes of carbon to the atmosphere.

Growing the 30,000 pounds worth of white roses used in the chapel used 18 tonnes of carbon. Other expenses included Liz's private jet flight to Milan for her dress-fitting another four tonnes.

The biggest polluter was the Learjet - to Mumbai and then the Maldives - which emitted 82 tonnes on its 12,000 mile round-trip.

Accomodation in India added 18.5 tonnes and food and drink came in at another 18.

The couple travelled to Jodhpur, taking 250 guests with them in seven chartered planes. Chefs flown in from London add another 20 tonnes.
