Khanduri proves majority in Uttarakhand Assembly

Dehradun, Mar 14 (UNI) The BJP-led Maj General (retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri government in Uttarakhand today proved its majority, securing 39 votes in the Assembly.

Addressing the House on the second day of the Assembly session, Mr Khanduri said his party emerged as the largest one in the Assembly elections held on February 21, winning 34 seats out of a total of 69 involved in the polls.

However, it was short of one member to form a government.

With the support of one Independent Legislator and three Uttarakhand Kranti Dal members, he staked his claim to form a government.

He had been given time till March 20 to prove his majority.

Thirty-nine members of the House supported him as against eight BSP members.

Earlier, the main opposition Congress staged a walkout in the House, criticising the BJP government for spending from the public exchequer at the swearing-in ceremony of Mr Khanduri.
