Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, Mar 13 (UNI) Protesting against the government's move to acquire over 1500 acres of land for setting up an industrial estate in their village, the villagers of Thervai today resorted to a novel protest by not sending their children to Panchayat Union Elementary schools and Government High School.

Official sources said the government was planning to set up an industrial estate of the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and the Sub-Registrar had ordered that no one should sell or purchase land in the village without government's consent.

As part of their protest, the villagers also forcibly closed down a Indian Made Foreign Liquor retail shop.

The villagers told the revenue officials, who rushed to the spot, that they would continue with their agitation until the District Collector concerned gave them a written assurance in this regard.
