Chennai, Mar 13 (UNI) Gemini Traze RFID Private Ltd, a system integration and network solution company, today announced the setting up of India's first Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based tags, with an intial investment of about Rs 18 crore.

Addressing a press conference here Gemini Traze CEO Pradhyumna T Venkat said with the RFID tag manufacturing facility in place, the company was all set to aggressively aid RFID deployment in the country, which had been slow to take off due to the high tag costs.

As the company would be able to supply tags at the rate of Rs 10 against the existing rate of Rs 30 to Rs 40, "our tag manufacturing initiative will trigger immediate and mass deployment of RFID in diverse areas in India." The facility near suburban Poonamallee, had a capacity to produce 100 million tags in various forms and sizes a year, catering to customised and different applications. The company would focus on supply chain solutions, retail solutions, asset tracing, airline booking, library and file management, electronic ticketing and passport, he said.

Besides catering to the domestic market, the company would be meeting 50 per cent of the market requirements in Middle and South Eastern countries and about 20 per cent each in European and the US markets, he said. The library and file management alone would require 200 million tags, he added.

The company was negotiating with the Centre and Public sector Hindustan Petroleum Chemicals Ltd (HPCL) to supply tags for passports and tracking the life cycle of cylinders. HPCL had floated a tender for tracking 50 lakh cylinders on a pilot project and the company had been shortlisted for award of contract, he added.
