Former President Bush treated at Calif hospital

LOS ANGELES, Mar 12 (Reuters) Former President George H W Bush, father of the current president, was treated overnight at a California hospital after becoming dizzy and dehydrated in the desert heat, a hospital spokeswoman said today.

''President Bush was playing golf in the 94 degree heat and became dizzy and dehydrated,'' Elizabeth Wholihan, a spokeswoman for Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, said in a statement.

Bush, 82, was released this morning, she said. Southern California has been baking under a heat wave that threatens to shatter record temperatures.

Bush was elected president in 1988 after serving two-terms as vice president to Ronald Reagan. He lost a re-election bid to Bill Clinton in 1992.

The White House said President George W Bush was informed by his personal physician, Dr Richard Tubb, about his father's condition yesterday before traveling to Guatemala City and spoke with him en route.

''He was held overnight. He's fine and he's resuming his normal schedule today,'' White House spokesman Tony Snow said of the former president.
