Canecharge on dalit wedding procession
Chhatarpur, MP, Mar 13 (UNI) Three police personnel, including a town inspector (TI), were suspended after a canecharge here on a dalit wedding procession where a high-decibel band was being played.
About a dozen people, including the groom, women and children, were injured in last night's incident.
Incensed processionists allegedly assaulted Superintendent of Police Chanchal Shekhar, Town Inspector Arun Dubey and other personnel. The processionists alleged that the officer duo rained canes on them.
The groom -- Prasad Basor's son Sohan Lal -- hailed from Budrakh village while this district's Bakayan Khidki-resident Haridas Basor's daughter Babli was the bride. After the canecharge, the processionists felt insulted and blocked the Sagar-Kanpur National Highway while returning.
Deputy Inspector-General (Chhatarpur Range) Vijay Katariya, District Collector Ajatshatru and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lalita Yadav reached the spot and regretted the canecharge.
TI Dubey, constables Mukesh and Rajesh were suspended. The situation simmered down and the processionists agreed to go ahead with the marriage. Eyewitnesses alleged that the canecharge resulted in head injury to Lal's ten-year-old nephew Vinay, an aged person Pancham Singh hurt his leg and a girl Roopsi sustained a severe hand injury.
