Pulse polio drive begins in Bihar

Patna, Mar 11 (UNI) Five days pulse polio drive, the third in this year, began her today with 85941 vaccinators reaching out to more than two crore children to administer them the dose of pulse polio drops across the state.

Official sources said that polio eradication programme was launched with new vigour as 61 cases of polio were detected in 25 districts of Bihar in 2006. Keeping the virus trends in mind, 27 districts were identified as 'high risk zone' and social mobilisers had been placed in these districts for helping in polio eradication drive.

Sources said that services of around 44,591 anganwadi sevikas of ICDS department had been requisitioned to reinforce the Pulse Polio drive. With the sustained effort of the government assisted by various voluntary and non government agencies, the percentage of the children below one year affected by polio dropped from 27 in 2005 to 28 in 2006.
