Postal dept to deploy aircraft for NE states

Shillong, Mar 9: The Department of Posts has proposed to hire an aircraft on lease to fly letters, parcels and cargo in the land-locked Nortn-Eastern states, official sources said here today.

In the absence of a reliable rail/air network, the department has been facing problem in carrying out dispatches in the region.

Therefore, it proposed to have an aircraft on lease from Indian Airlines for disptaching mails, they said.

In addition to an initial one-time expenditure of Rs 12 crore, approximately Rs. 36 crore will be incurred on this account per year according to an initial estimation.

It is expected that the quick service and increased mails could generate additional revenue to the department.
