NTPC's Vindhyachal project becomes nation's largest station

New Delhi, Mar 9 (UNI) National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd's (NTPC) Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power Project has become the largest station in the country with the synchronisation of its 500 mw unit under stage III.

The installed capacity of Vindhyachal Station, located in Madhya Pradesh, has increased to 3,260 mw and that of the company to 26,904 mw.

The approved investment for the third stage is Rs 4,201.5 crore while that of stage I and II was Rs 4,053.42 crore.

The power station, the foundation of which was laid by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1982, has been running on a plant load factor of 92 per cent. It caters to electricity requirements of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman and Diu and Dadar Nagar Haveli.

Earlier, NTPC's Talcher Super Thermal Power Station was the largest station with the 3,000 MW installed capacity.

Today, NTPC Ltd is the leading power generating company in the country having well-diversified portfolio. With about 20 per cent of the country's total installed capacity. NTPC generated about 28 per cent of the country's total electricity in the year 2005-06.
