Maoists propose abolition of monarchy in Nepal's Parliament

Kathmandu, Mar 9 (UNI) Members of Parliament of the CPN-Maoist and Janamorcha Nepal today registered a proposal to directly announce Nepal a republic by abolishing monarchy.

The parties in their proposal said Parliament should directly declare Nepal a republic if the king is found to be involved in conspiring to disrupt the constituent assembly election to be held in June this year.

One fourth of the house members could register a proposal to abolish the monarchy, an idea that would take off the ground if endorsed by a majority of two third.

Maoist Parliamentarians Janardan Sharma and Khem Lal Devkota, and Leela Mani Pokhrel and Kaman Singh Lama of Janmorcha have signed the proposal, which can easily be passed if there is an understanding among the seven parties alliance and the Maoists.

The parliament has stripped the king of all his powers and the new constitution promulgated in January has suspended monarchy until the election to the constituent assembly is held.
