Congress terms TDP maha dharna as 'undemocratic'

Hyderabad, Mar 9 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today described as ''undemocratic'' the opposition Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) ''Maha Dharna'' in the state protesting the injustice to weaker sections.

Addressing a press conference here, official spokesperson N Thulasi Reddy said the State Government, headed by Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, had declared several welfare schemes for the weaker sections for housing.

He said six lakh acre of land was distributed, The INDIRA PPRABHA and NREGP programmes were launched and more funds allocated for the welfare of the weaker sections.

He said the government had earmarked Rs 3073 crore for the welfare of Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes during 2007-08 and Rs 2,945 crore for social security and nutrition during the same year.

He alleged that during the TDP regime, the weaker sections had suffered gross negligence and it was only during the Congress regime that weaker sections were getting more share.

Telugu Desam Party leaders, led by President N Chandrababu Naidu, organised a 'padayatra' to Indira Park in the city and organised ''Maha Dharna'' protesting the inadequate allocations in both Central and State Budget for the weaker sections and social security sector.
