Cong MP Subba's nationality issue rocks Asom Assembly again

Guwahati, Mar 9 (UNI) The Asom Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes for the third consecutive day today over the controversial nationality issue of three-time Congress MP Mani Kumar Subba.

Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Brindaban Goswami raised the issue in the Assembly after the question hour and said that ''it is a matter of great concern and shame as Subba, being a foreigner represents the state in the Lok Sabha for the third time on Congress party ticket''.

He also informed the House the Supreme Court had to pass comments against the CBI for failing to resolve the nationality issue of Subba for the last sixteen years.

All members from the Opposition benches supported Mr Goswami and created uproar in the House demanding a statement from the government on the issue.

Succumbing to the pressure from the combined Opposition, Speaker T B Rai ruled the government make a statement in the House to resolve the issue.

Parliamenary Affairs Minister Bharat Narah, quoting rules said that, '' As Mr Subba is a Member of Parliament, the state government could not issue a statement in the Assembly.

Moreover, the whole issue is pending in the Supreme Court.'', Mr Goswami alleged, quoting local news paper reports, that Mr Subba was a Nepali national who fled the country after being convicted in a murder case in the early 1970s. The CBI was investigating the matter, he added.
