Varanasi, Mar 9 (UNI) Charging Amitabh Bachchan with painting a false picture of Uttar Pradesh to give political mileage to the ruling Samajwadi Party, the BJP today burnt actor in effigy here.

Led by state party executive member Ashok Pandey and UP BJP (intellectual cell) vice president Kaushal Kihore Mishra, BJP activists burnt the actor's effigy and posters at Assi Ghat edging the Ganga river here.

The protestors alleged that the actor by falsely portraying Uttar Pradesh as a bright and prosperous state, attained the sin of lying on the banks of the sacred river.

''The ad, where Mr Bachchan claims that Uttar Pradesh is on the path of progress proves he is deliberately hiding the truth that his home state is a lawless province,'' the BJP leaders noted.

The saffron activists also raised anti-Amitabh and anti-Jaya Bachchan slogans for supporting an ''anti-people regime'' led by Mulayam Singh Yadav.
