Surjewala criticises Badal on river waters sharing issue

Kaithal, Mar 7 (UNI) Shamsher Singh Surjewala President All India Kisan-Khet Mazdoor Congress today described the statement of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal that Haryana had no right on Punjab river waters as ''politically, legally and constitutionally untenable and unjustified''.

While addressing a press conference here today, Mr Surjewala also decried Mr Badal's statemnt that clause 5 of the water agreements will be terminated and Haryana and Rajasthan will not get any water.

''An attitude of confrontation on such sensitive issues was not in the interest of any state'', he said.

Mr Surjewala stressed that Haryana had every democratic right to claim its share in the canal waters adding that every Tribunal on the matter had ruled that Haryana had a share in the water of Punjab rivers and expressed hope that Mr Badal would give a second thought to his statement.

Mr Surjewala also suggested said that farmers' associations of two states should sit together and take a decision in the interest of whole farming community of Punjab and Haryana .
