HC reserves orders on Nalini's daughter's case
Chennai, Mar 6 (UNI) Madras High Court today reserved orders on a petition filed by Nalini, who was awarded life sentence in the Rajiv Gandhi Assisination case, seeking a direction to the Union Government to permit her daughter Mehra to come to India and stay here until the status of her citizenship was decided by the Centre under Section 9 (2) of the Citizenship Act.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Mr Justice K Chandru reserved orders after hearing arguments from N G R Prasad, petitioner's counsel and P Wilson, Assistant Solicitor General.
During arguments, Mr Prasad said as Nalini was an Indian citizen, her daughter should be permitted to come to india and stay here.
Mr Wilson said Mehra had already obtained Sri Lankan citizenship and passport of Sri Lanka. It was presumed she had voluntarily acquired citizenship of that country. Therefore, before determination of citizenship she could not come to India.
