EU mission heads to NKorea to support N-deal
Berlin, March 6: A European Union delegation will travel to North Korea today for two days of talks to show support for Pyongyang's decision to abandon its nuclear weapons programme, EU presidency holder Germany said.
The mission, comprising representatives from Germany, the European Commission and the EU's Secretariat General, aims to promote the rapid implementation of an agreement reached over the Communist state's nuclear work.
''For the EU, the trip is also of an exploratory nature since the outcome of the visit will provide important guidelines for discussions within the EU as to its future relations with North Korea,'' a government statement said today.
The visit follows talks on Monday in New York between US and North Korean officials aimed at eventually normalising ties as part of last month's deal.
World powers are keen to ensure North Korea is committed to following through on its agreement to shut down its main nuclear facility and allow inspections in return for fuel oil.
The February. 13 deal was agreed between North Korea, South Korea, the United States, Japan, Russia and China after three years of talks punctuated by Pyongyang's nuclear test in October.
Representatives from Portugal, the EU's next president, will also participate in the trip.
