Kandla Port handled 47.5 MMT Cargo till 2007

Gandhidham (Kutch Dist), Mar 3: Kandla Port has crossed yet anothermilestone by handling 47.5 MMT cargo during the current fiscal yearupto February this year. The port has surpassed its own previous recordof 46.30 MMT handled during 1999-2000 fiscal year.

This achievement was more commendable as it was achieved in thebackdrop of increasing competition from the nearby private ports in theregion, Kandl Port Trust release said here today.

With the present trend in traffic growth, Kandla Port will poiseto touch the 52 MMT mark by the end of this fiscal year and join theleague of Vishakapatanam, Mumbai and Chennai ports in the countryhandling 50 million plus cargo.

The Kandla Port, traditionally known for handling dry cargoes, wasable to attract some new cargoes like Iron Ore, Iron Ore Pallets,Manganese Ore, Butadiene and Perforic Acid.

The container throughout at the Post also grew 21 per cent totouch 1.61 lakh Twenty Equal Units (TEU) as of now and likely to betouch 1.80 lakh TEU by the end of this fiscal year.

The 12th Cargo Berth in the Kandla Port, which is scheduled tocommence operations this month, was taken over by Agrawal BrothersGroup for Container Terminal operations which can attract additionallarger consignments of steel cargo, the release said.
