EC announces bypolls schedule to fill RS vacancies

New Delhi, Mar 3: The Election Commission has announced theelection schedule for holding the byelections to two seats -- one eachin Punjab and Haryana -- to fill the vacancy in the upper house ofParliament from these two States.

According to an EC release here today, these vacancies occured dueto the death of Ms Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder on December 15, 2006 in Punjaband Ms Sumitra Mahajan on January 19, 2007 for Haryana. The terms wereupto April 9, 2010 for Ms Bhinder and April 9, 2008 in the case of MsMahajan.

As per the election schedule announced by the EC, the electionwould be notified on March 12, 2007, the last date of makingnominations would be March 19, scrutiny of nominations will be held onMarch 20, last date of withdrawal is March 22 and polling, if required,would be held on March 29.

Counting of votes will be taken up on the same date and the datebefore which the election shall be completed is April 3, the releaseadded.
