At least eight killed in Alabama tornado - CNN

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Mar 2 (Reuters) At least eight people were killed when a tornado tore into the small town of Enterprise in Alabama, CNN reported, one of several twisters that ripped across a broad swath of the US South.

Emergency officials could not immediately confirm CNN or local television accounts of the deaths, which were reported inside a high school in Enterprise.

The Montgomery Advertiser newspaper said state emergency managers were asked to send a ''mass fatality'' recovery team to Enterprise in Alabama's Coffee County.

Television news footage showed helicopters landing at the school while ambulances came and went. Part of the school had collapsed and the building was surrounded with broken trees.

The Montgomery Advertiser said another fatality occurred in the southern Alabama town of Miller's Ferry, where extensive damage was reported.
