Sumati Mutatkar passes away

Kolkata, Feb 28 (UNI) Veteran classical singer Sumati Mutatkar died at a private hospital here today following illness. She was 91 and is survived by her daughter.

Suffering from bronchial asthma, she was admitted to the hospital on February 24 with breathing problem and chest infection, doctors said.

A recipient of Padma Shri in 1991, Ms Mutatkar also received the Kalidas Samman, Akashvani Samman and ITC award. She was Director of Music in All India Radio from 1953 to 1956 and Deputy Chief Producer of Music from 1956 to 1958 and 1965 to 1968. She was elected a Fellow of Sangeet Research Academy in 1979.
