Suicide rate among Indians community in Dubai up by 10%

Dubai, Feb 28 (UNI) Suicide rate among the Indian community in Dubai has increased by ten per cent over the last year, the Indian Consulate has reported.

The number of deaths registered last year rose to 1,157, compared to 971 in 2005 with 100 victims committing suicide, a spokesman said.

The consulate, which attributed the increase to the growing number of Indians in the UAE, is investigating reasons for the dramatic increase in both deaths and suicides.

The consul also dealt with 1,408 labour cases last year, up from 760 in 2005 and sheltered 41 destitute women or runaway maids who had fled their homes and employers.
