RLD MLA, former Cong MP joines SP
Lucknow, Feb 27 (UNI) Sitting Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) MLA from Meerut Samarpal Singh and former Congress MP Gangacharan Rajput today joined the ruling Samajwadi Party.
Talking to reporters here, senior Samajwadi Party leader and state PWD minister Shivpal Singh Yadav said the two leaders would help the party broaden its base in the Meerut and Bundelkhand regions respectively.
Samarpal Singh is a known rebel leader of Ajit Singh's RLD, which had recently withdrawn support to the ruling dispensation.
Incidentally, Rajput is the same leader who had pointed a gun at his temple at the AICC headquarters in the National Capital to protest the decision of party president Sonia Gandhi against becoming the Prime Minister soon after the last general elections.
Rajput's son Akhil, a Youth Congress leader also joined the SP.
To a poser on the BJP's victory in Uttrakhand and Punjab assembly elections, Mr Yadav said Congress was to be blamed for the return of BJP in the two states. ''Poor work by Congress governments enabled a communal party regain power in the two states,'' he added.
He said the SP would not be affected by one of its MPs Munnawar Hassan joining the RLD. ''He would realise his real worth now...he should have resigned from his Parliament membership before joining RLD,'' he added.
