Home guards demand regularisation of posts

Guwahati, Feb 27 (UNI) Hundreds of home guards continued their protest near the Asom Assembly for the second day today, demanding regularisation of their posts and other demands.

The All Assam Trained Home Guards Association demanded the 1947 Home Guards Act be replaced with a new one, and the term 'voluntary' in describing the nature of their job removed.

They demanded the posts of home guards be regularised and salary and other benefits be provided, like the other constables.

They wanted all new appointments of home guards to be stopped until those already employed were regularized.

The agitators also demanded financial relief to the families of those home guards killed on duty.

There are over 23,000 home guards, both male and female, currently employed in the state.
