Kaiga power plant unit-III achieves criticality
Kaiga, Karnataka, Feb 26 (UNI) The 220 Mwe third unit of the Kaiga Atomic Power Plant achieved criticality at 1010 hrs today, becoming the 17th nuclear power unit in the country and the first to use nuclear chain reaction.
Power generated in this unit would be supplied to the Southern grid, covering Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Goa.
The third unit was completed in a record period of four years and 11 months. Kaiga's unit two achieved criticality on September 24, 1999. After completion of the fourth unit at Kaiga, the authorities would think of establishing fifth and sixth units in the same site.
The Kaiga Atomic Power plant, situated in Uttara Kannada district, comprised two pressurised Heavy Water Reactors, each with an installed capacity of 220 MWe.
