Freedom fighter Banmali Das passed away

Balasore, Feb 26 (UNI) Veteran freedom fighter and former MLA Banmali Das died today at his residence in Nilgiri after prolonged illness.

He was 89.

Mr Das actively participated in the freedom struggle and was behind bars for nearly 13 and a half years. He would be remembered for his key role in the merger of the then feudal state of Nilgiri with the Republic of India on November 14, 1947 .

He was thrice elected to Orissa Assembly during 1967, 1971 and 1974 from Nilgiri Assembly constituency as the Communist party candidate and chosen the best legislator in 2001.

People from various walks of life, former Nilgiri MLA Pradipta Panda, Balasore sadar MLA Arun Dey and senior district officials today visited his residence to pay tribute.

All the educational institutions and business establishments of Nilgiri were closed today as mark of respect.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters.
