Bellary, Feb 25: Opposition Congress will extend full support to JDS-BJP coalition government in Karnataka on Cauvery water sharing issue, Pradesh Congress Committee President Mallikarjun Kharge said today.

Mr Kharge, who was on a private visit to this city, told newspersons at the airport, ''as the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal's final verdict had become detrimental to the interests of the state, Congress would extend full support and abide by the decision taken by the state government in the interests of the people of the state.

However, the coalition government should make honest efforts to set right the injustice meted out to the people in general and farmers in particular''.

Replying to a question, he said there was nothing wrong in former Union Minister of State for Information M H Ambareesh tendering his resignation in protest against CWDT award.

''Since he is a people's representative, he has to respond to the feelings of the people'', he said.

To a question, he said the UPA Government at the centre, which had to take into consideration of all the coalition partners, cannot take a unilateral decision in favour of any one state and hence cannot intervene in the matter.

''Congress in Karnataka, is however, in favour of appealing to the Centre to intervene on the issue'', he added.

Mr Kharge said that since Kerala and Tamil Nadu had also decided to go on appeal on the issue, the deadlock was likely to continue.
