Imphal, Feb 23 (UNI) The construction of Tipaimukh dam in Manipur has been opposed by various organisations here despite Dr Manmohan Singh's assurance that it will be constructed.

The dam, after its construction, will be able to produce 1500 mw of power.

Advocate and former Member of Manipur Human Rights Commission Kh Chonjohn Singh said his clients Singongpou Pamei and Aram Pamei had informed the Union Environment Ministry about the pending PIL in Gauhati High Court, in which various important issues of public importance about the dam was involved.

Besides, those questions of public importance raised in the Written Petition copy had already been delivered through the Central Government Standing Counsel in the High Court. Mr Singh said his clients had now discovered existence of a letter written by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to the General Manager, NEEPCO, over the dam issue.

With a view to avoiding any further problem relating to the construction of the project during the pendency of the PIL, he requested refraining from going ahead with the process of environmental clearance consideration on the Tipaimukh Hydro-electric Multipurpose Project till the disposal of the PIL.
