Report on displaced people in Asom released

Guwahati, Feb 23 (UNI) A report on internally displaced people in Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar and Karbi Anglong districts of Asom was released here today.

The report was part of the study conducted on displaced people in the South Asia by the Calcutta Research Centre (CRC).

Ranabir Samadar of the CRC, present at the release, said the study identified four conditions under which people were primarily displaced.

''These are conflict-induced, environment-induced and development-induced displacements, while in the fourth category people become invisible, that is, they do not move in groups, but are lost in the crowd,'' he added.

Prof Manirul Hussain of the Gauhati University, releasing the report, underscored the need for quick rehabilitation of displaced people, particularly through government initiatives.

He said the miseries of the displaced people could be checked to a great extent if speedy rehabilitation was provided to them.

Prof Hussain pointed to the Kokrajhar relief camps, which still housed 50,000 people displaced during ethnic riots in the early 1990s.

''Entire generations have been born and brought up in relief camps, which are meant to be only temporary shelters,'' he added.
