Puducherry, Feb 23 (UNI) Communist Party of India National council member R Viswanathan, MLA, today demanded that the Centre should spell out the merits and de-merits of the port development project in the Union Territory.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Viswanathan said it was the duty of the Centre and the Puducherry government to remove the apprehension among the people that the fishermen and farmers would be severly hit if the port development project was implemented.

The extra Rs 45 crore obtained in the annual plan allocation compared to last year's allocation would not help the development of the Union Territory, he said adding the two MPs from Puducherry as well as leaders of political parties should strive to get more funds.

Seeking a ban on the entry of multinational companies into small trade sector in Puducherry, the CPI leader demanded that the government take steps to check the soaring prices of essential commodities.
