Srinagar, Feb 23 (UNI) The Kashmir valley remained cut off from the rest of the country for the third day today, following the closure of 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

However, a number of light vehicles were allowed to move in the afternoon yesterday, before fresh landslides occurred at Penthal.

About one thousand passengers, including women, stranded at Ramban, walked down about 7 km hilly terrain to reach Ramsu last night.

A traffic police official said the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country by road, remained closed because of landslides and shooting of stones.

A spokesman of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, told UNI that hundreds of workers were working round the clock to make it traffic worthy.

With the main road getting damaged, he said, efforts were being made to for an alternative.
