eGoM approves merger plan for AI, Indian
New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) Decks have finally been cleared for the merger of government-owned Air India and Indian (Airlines) with an empowered group of ministers (eGoM) endorsing the proposal.
''We want a big, strong national carrier to beat growing competition in Indian skies,'' said civil aviation minister Praful Patel. ''There will be no dampner. It (the merger process) will be a smooth affair.'' He said a new company will be formed and both airlines will be merged into it. The company will retain public sector unit (PSU) character, said the minister after the eGoM headed by external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee wound up an hour-long meeting.
