Hyderabad, Feb 21 (UNI) The Andhra Pradesh Congress today termed as ''supression of press freedom'' the projection of the state government's action against Margadarshi Financiers, a mediabaron-run firm charged with accepting deposits in violation of the RBI Act.

In a statement, government whips S Udayabhanu and D Sridhar Babu and four other CLP members said ''The Constitution does not guarantee immunity to any pressperson for their criminal actions.

One of the greatest privileges of our country is the rule of law.

Law applies equally to all. Just because somebody is running a newspaper, he cannot claim immunity for criminal and illegal activities.'' They said even if the government was willing to overlook the illegality of acceptance of the deposits by Margadarsi, the larger issue of protection of the interests of 2.75 lakh depositors and Rs 2,600 crore would still be the government's responsibility, particulary when the firm had reported Rs 1,400 crore loss as on March 31, 2006.
