Hyderabad, Feb 20: Gravity maps provide better understanding of the geodynamic evolution and aid in natural resource mapping, especially hydrocarbon and metals, Director General of Geological Survey of India P M Tejale said.

Releasing a new set of Gravity Maps of India at National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) here yesterday, he said the data from the map would be of immense use in meeting challenges of ground water resources, natural hazards like tsunami and environmental degradation.

With the government increasing the Foreign Direct Investment cap in oil exploration work, these maps would be of great help even to private players, he said.

The new maps were far improvised than those released in 1978.

Former NGRI Directors Hari Narain and D Guptasarma emphasised the importance of earth sciences in the 21st century, and exhorted the budding scientists to pursue research for the socioeconomic benefits of the country.

Several organisations like the Geological Survey of India, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Survey of India and Oil India Limited collaborated with the NGRI in this international project, NGRI Director V P Dimri said.
