Guwahati,Feb 19(UNI) Prime Minister Dr Monmohan Singh today asserted that the Backward Regions Grant Fund(BEGF) will bridge the gaps between the district planning, its implementation and development.

Addressing a programme after launching the BEGF, a centrally sponsored scheme at Mondia, about 120 kms from here in Lower Asom's Barpeta district, Mr Singh said the scheme would strengthen the Panchayati Raj systems and municipal governance.

The Prime Minister said that every selected district would receive a minimum of Rs 10 crore per annum, plus additional allocations depending on the population and the area. All the eleven districts of the state have been selected under this scheme.

He said the UPA government was committed to develop infrastructure of the region like road communications, bridges, education, health, irrigation and water supply. Through BRGF, the Centre would try to fulfil these commitments providing planning and monitoring support to all the local bodies.

This scheme would also accelerate delivery of services assigned to Panchayati Raj institutions, he said.

He appreciated the present state government's performance for providing good governance in the state and hoped that under the leadership of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the state would "prosper".

The Prime Minister was on a two-day visit to Manipur and Asom.

He also attended the closing ceremony of the 33rd National Games here yesterday as the Chief Guest.

Union Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar and Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also spoke on the occasion and sought help from all sections of the people while implementing the government's plans for the development of the rural people.
