Tripura: 500 agitators arrested, situation normal

Agartala, Feb 19: About 500 agitators were arrested from the different parts of the state following the dawn-to-dusk Tripura bandh sponsored by the Congress student wing, NSUI, today.

The NSUI, had called for the strike in support of its charter of demands.

Additional Director General of Police R K Shukla told UNI that despite a few minor incidents here, the situation was under control.

The police officials also claimed that the bandh was peaceful as all kind of activities, including vehicular traffic, was normal.

An unofficial source said barring Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC), a few number of private buses plied its services on various routes.

All kind of business establishments, shops and markets remained closed today in view of the 12-hour bandh.

The local police had arranged vehicles for the passengers from and to the airport.

The bandh had been called protesting the Thursday's alleged police atrocities on the NSUI activists while they were on their way to submit memorandum to the state Chief Secretary in support of charter of demands.

The NSUI had also alleged that the distribution of jobs to unemployed youths was a false propaganda of the ruling government.
