Kochi, Feb 18 (UNI) Parliamentarian and Chairman of Kingfisher Airlines Vijay Mallya today said the civil aviation infrastructure should be developed to keep pace with the economic development of the country.

Delivering the 'Neelakantan Memorial Speech' at the inaugural function of the Annual General Meeting of the Aeronautical Society of India here, Mr Mallya said the civil aviation infrastructure should be developed as the sector was neglected for the last 20 years.

Mr Mallya said the Indian aviation industry would lose around Rs 2,000 crore due to inadequate civil aviation infrastructure.

He alleged that eventhough the Airport Authority of India was 'flushed with funds', lack of planning and focus were deterrents in the development of aviation industry.

'' There should be a poltical will for development and the mindset of the policy makers should also change,'' he noted.

Mr Mallya said the redevelopment schemes for existing airports would not address the problem as new infastructure was needed for the sector.

He said proper training of personnel in the sector was also an important factor in the aviation industry.

'' Apart from establishing training institutes, experts from other countries should be brought to provide expertise to air-traffic controllers in the country,'' Mr Mallya noted.

Taking into consideration the rate of growth, there was a dispairy in infrastructure and growth and this gulf should be filled with proper policies.

'' When most countries anticipate growth and build infrastructure accordingly, India try to grow first and build infrastructure later,'' he alleged.
