93 blasts: Defence to reply on 'max sentence'

Mumbai, Feb 18: Defence lawyers will present their arguments inthe designated TADA court on February 23 in the 1993 serial blasts casein response to the prosecution's demand for awarding ''maximumsentence'' to 100 convicts, except three women convicts and two otherswho suffer from life threatening diseases.

Defence lawyers Farhana Shah and Subhash Kanse will argue thematter before Judge P D Kode, who is conducting the serial blaststrial.

According to defence lawyers, they took 25 working days to argueon the quantum of sentence. On the contrary, the Central Bureau ofInvestigation (CBI) completed the arguement in a day's time.

''It is an eyewash,'' they said and pointed out that some peoplehave been charged with recovery and some with landing of arms andexplovises. They cannot be given capital punishment.

Comparing the serial blasts case with the 2001 Parliament attackcase was incorrect as the background of the serial blasts was totallydifferent, they added.
